El Hierro : introduction
El Hierro Airport, whose official name is “Los Cangrejos Airport“, is open to civil, public and commercial air traffic.
Located 9 km north-east of Valverde, it can accommodate helicopters of all types, light jets, midsize jets, long-range jets, turboprops and commercial aircraft.

History of El Hierro Airport
- 1967 : Construction of a runway, aircraft platform and passenger terminal begins.
- 1972 : Construction is completed and the airport is inaugurated. The first landing on the island is made by the Dornier aircraft Do 27, belonging to the Spanish Air Force. The first regular connection is opened the same year by the national airline Iberia.
- 1989 – 1990 : a new passenger terminal and control tower are built.
- 1992 : the runway is extended to 1,205 metres, which subsequently allowed for an increase in the number of passengers and operations.
