Reunion Island: a brief history

Isolated in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Réunion remained uninhabited until the 17th century. In 1642, the French officially took possession of the island on behalf of King Louis XIII. The island became a strategic point for the Compagnie des Indes and a crossroads for trade between Europe, Africa and Asia. It welcomed settlers, slaves from Madagascar and Mozambique, and indentured laborers from India and China.
This human diversity has shaped a mixed culture that is still very much alive today. Settlement took place along the coast, but the natural cirques formed around the Piton des Neiges have long served as a refuge, particularly for maroon slaves.
A French department since 1946, Réunion is today a dynamic overseas territory at the crossroads of many influences. Its violent, rich and complex history is still evident in its landscapes, languages and traditions.
