History of Barcelona-El Prat airport
In 1918, Barcelona airport moved from El Remolar to El Prat, where it remains today. In 1927, the Spanish airline Iberia set up operations here, making the first flight between Barcelona and Madrid. During the Second World War, the airport was used for military purposes, as were the vast majority of European airports.
After the war, the airport underwent constant expansion, particularly in the 1950s and early 1990s, just prior to the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. In 2002, a third runway and a second terminal were added. Today, Barcelona Airport is Europe’s tenth-largest airport.
