History of Berlin Tegel Airport
The Berlin Tegel airfield was established at the beginning of the 20th century. It was originally used for airship balloons. During the Second World War, Allied forces used the airport during Berlin Airlift and built a temporary airport in just 90 days.
Civil aviation was established at the airport in 1960. First operated by Air France, the airport eventually expanded in the 1970s. After the reunification of Berlin, it continued its development to become what it is today.
Location & access
Located 11 km northwest of the city, Berlin Tegel Airport is very close to the city centre. By car, it takes about 20 minutes to get there from the airport, via the road B2 then B5.
