History of Frankfurt Main Airport
Frankfurt’s airfield, opened in 1925 in the Rebstock district, was initially dedicated to airships. In 1936, the Rhine-Main airport opened its doors and welcomed numerous aircraft and zeppelins. Following the tragic crash of the LZ129 Hindenburg airship, which was to carry many people between Frankfurt and New York in 1937, it was decided to dismantle all zeppelins.
During the Second World War, the airport served as a base for German forces. At the end of the war, American troops seized it and used it for the Berlin Airlift between 1948 and 1949. Since the 1950s, Frankfurt Main airport has grown steadily to become one of the largest in Europe.
