Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte: A little history
Built between 1656 and 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s Superintendent of Finances, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte marks a decisive step in the history of French classical architecture. Conceived by the unprecedented alliance of three talents – architect Le Vau, painter-decorator Le Brun and landscape gardener Le Nôtre – it embodies a unified vision of art, space and power.
When the estate was inaugurated in August 1661, its grandeur aroused admiration… and jealousy. A few days later, by direct order of the King, Nicolas Fouquet was arrested. Accused of having financed the project with public funds, he spent the rest of his life in captivity. The King then entrusted the construction of Versailles to the same artists, adopting the codes established at Vaux-le-Vicomte.
Today, the château remains a model of balance and staging, preserved and restored by the Vogüé family, its owners for five generations.
