History of Palma de Mallorca airport

In 1920, Palma de Mallorca airport was no more than a field near the town of Son Sant Joan. Initially used mainly by the postal services of the Balearic Islands, it was transformed into a military airport in 1938.

In 1958, the runway was extended and refurbished to accommodate a growing number of aircraft. However, the increase in air traffic made it necessary to build a new terminal. The airport closed temporarily for the work and reopened in 1960.

Expansion continued with the construction of two further terminals in 1965 and 1997. A second runway was also inaugurated in 1974. Spain’s third-largest airfield, Palma de Mallorca Airport handles over 27 million passengers. Today, it handles almost 200,000 movements every year.
