A little history: Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy
Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy are two islands in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea. Although both are now French Overseas Collectivities, their history is marked by a succession of European colonizations.
- Saint-Barthélemy was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. First colonized by the French, it was ceded to Sweden in 1784, before becoming French again in 1878. Swedish heritage is still evident in the island’s street names and traditions.
- Saint-Martin, meanwhile, has had the distinction of being divided between two nations since 1648: the northern part is French, the southern part Dutch. This unique cohabitation makes it a bicultural territory, where French, English and Dutch live side by side.
Since 2007, the two islands have no longer been administratively attached to Guadeloupe, and enjoy autonomous status as Collectivités d’Outre-Mer, with their own territorial councils. They are renowned for their paradisiacal setting, top-of-the-range tourist infrastructure and accessibility by helicopter or private plane.
