Saint-Barthelemy: introduction

Need a vacation? Why not take a private jet to the island of Saint-Barthelemy? Take off for the Caribbean with AEROAFFAIRES.

Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, Saint-Barthelemy is an island jewel, attracting thousands of travelers every year.

History of Saint-Barthelemy

The history of the Caribbean island of Saint-Barthelemy is rich in cultural diversity and international exchanges. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, it was the scene of colonial struggles between European powers, passing in turn under French and Swedish domination before returning under the tricolor flag in 1878.

The Gustaf III airport, inaugurated in 1984, represents a major milestone in the island’s contemporary history. Renowned for its short runway and spectacular aerial approach, it contributes to Saint-Barthélemy’s exclusivity by welcoming flights from neighboring destinations.

Although limited to smaller aircraft due to its topography, the airport has played an essential role in the island’s tourism development. Its singular charm and upscale atmosphere are preserved thanks to this restricted accessibility.

In this way, Saint-Barthelemy’s history, between its historical roots and its exclusive aerial present, contributes to making this island a jewel of the Caribbean, where every visitor is welcomed by a unique and memorable experience.

Saint-Barthelemy airport used to be called Saint-Jean-Gustave-III, Gustave III being the Swedish sovereign who bought the island from France in 1785. Sweden eventually sold the island back to France less than a century later, and the airport is now called Saint-Barthelemy-Rémy-de-Haenen, in tribute to the French adventurer who first landed his plane on the island. Rémy de Haenen, a pioneer of aviation in the Caribbean, went on to become mayor of Saint-Barthelemy.

Recommandations

St-Barthélemy is the smallest island in the French West Indies. Away from the crowd, you can rest in peace. AEROAFFAIRES recommends that you stroll on its many beaches, especially those of Colombier, Saint-Jean, Gouverneur and Anse Marigot, the only grey sandy beach on the island.
The beach of Grand Cul de Sac is the ideal place for all water activities (kayaking, snorkeling,…).

You can also climb to the top of Le Morne de Vitet, whose highest point is 286 metres. To grab some bargains, you have to go to Gustavia, where the port area is “duty free”.

AEROAFFAIRES recommends the luxury hotel Le Barthélemy. Along a magnificent bay facing the ocean, it is also a paradise for gourmets, who will appreciate the cuisine of the Michelin-starred chef Guy Martin. You will also find all the comforts you can expect by staying at Villa Marie Saint-Barth, a 5-star hotel overlooking the heights of Colombier.
