Location & access
Princess Juliana Airport is an international airport, located only 15 km northwest of the capital Phillipsburg, and southwest of the city of Marigot. Its airstrip runs along Simpson Bay.
You will need less than 30 minutes by car from Phillipsburg and if you wish, AEROAFFAIRES can book you a vehicle with driver upon your arrival.
The airport also serves the French part of the island, which nevertheless has its own airport, Grande-Case Espérance. After your stay, you can then easily return to the French territories of the West Indies.
Renting a helicopter can sometimes give you more flexibility and speed than regular tracks, so don’t hesitate to ask us your questions for more information. From St-Barthelemy to St-Martin, count 12 minutes of flight for both airports but from 990€ to Grande-Case and 1400€ to Princess Juliana.
With AEROAFFAIRES, you can also fly over the Caribbean by helicopter to enjoy a unique view.
Open from 7am to 9pm, you can land outside these hours if you pay additional charges.
The coordinates of the airport are:
- Airport Code: SXM
- Latitude: 18.0409° N
- Longitude: 63.1088 ° W
- Altitude: 4.27 m
- Runway length: 2180 m
Its 2180-metre concrete runway can accommodate all types of aircrafts, such as turboprop engines, light, medium and long-haul private jets, as well as regional and commercial planes. Many aircrafts, too large for Grande-Case Airport, located on the French side of St-Martin, are redirected to Princess Juliana.
History of Princess Juliana Airport
Princess Juliana Airport opened during the Second World War as a military airfield, before becoming a civilian airport in 1943. Its name is a tribute to a former queen of the Netherlands, who landed there in 1944.
The airport is regularly renovated and now has a separate terminal for private jets, where you can find VIP and meeting rooms. This $100 million terminal was opened in 2006 by Queen Beatrix.
On September 6, 2017, Princess Juliana Airport was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma.
Famous for its flights less than 3 metres above the most popular beach in the Caribbean, Maho Beach, the airport is renowned for having one of the most scenic landings in the world. The Sunset Bar at the end of the runway is also one of the favourite places of amateur aviators.
If you are passing by St-Martin, do not miss the nature reserve, the butterfly farm and the ascent of Pic Paradis, for the more adventurous. It is the highest point of St-Martin (424 metres) and its access offers you a splendid view of the Caribbean Sea and of Marigot.
AEROAFFAIRES also recommends that you stay in the sumptuous Belmond La Samanna Hotel, while enjoying its private beach, spa and fine restaurant.
