Location & access

Princess Juliana Airport is an international airport, located only 15 km northwest of the capital Phillipsburg, and southwest of the city of Marigot. Its airstrip runs along Simpson Bay.

Phillipsburg can be reached in less than 30 minutes by car and if you wish, AEROAFFAIRES can book you a vehicle with driver to meet you upon your arrival.

The airport also serves the French part of the island, which has its own airport, Grande-Case Espérance. After your stay, you can then easily visit the French part of the West Indies.

Renting a helicopter can sometimes give you more flexibility and speed than regular transport, so don’t hesitate to ask us for more information on this service. The journey from St-Barthelemy to St-Martin takes just 12 minutes for both airports, with prices starting at 990€ for Grande-Case and 1400€ for Princess Juliana.

AEROAFFAIRES allows you to fly over the Caribbean by helicopter, enjoying a one-of-a-kind view.

Useful information

The airport is open from 7am to 9pm, but you can land outside these hours for an additional fee.

The coordinates of the airport are:

  • Airport Code: SXM
  • Latitude: 18.0409° N
  • Longitude: 63.1088 ° W
  • Altitude: 4.27 m
  • Runway length: 2180 m

Its 2180-metre concrete runway can accommodate all types of aircraft, such as turboprop engines, light, medium and long-haul private jets, as well as regional and commercial planes. Many planes that are too large for Grande-Case Airport, located on the French side of St-Martin, are redirected to Princess Juliana.

History of Princess Juliana Airport

Princess Juliana Airport opened during the Second World War as a military airfield, before becoming a civilian airport in 1943. Its name is a tribute to a former queen of the Netherlands, who landed there in 1944.

The airport is regularly renovated and now has a separate terminal for private jets, equipped with VIP lounges and meeting rooms. This $100 million terminal was opened in 2006 by Queen Beatrix.

On September 6, 2017, Princess Juliana Airport was severely damaged by Hurricane Irma.

Recommandations

Famous for its flights less than 3 metres above the most popular beach in the Caribbean, Maho Beach, the airport is renowned for having one of the most scenic landings in the world. The Sunset Bar at the end of the runway is also a favourite spot for amateur aviators.

If you are passing by St-Martin, do not miss the nature reserve, the butterfly farm and, for the more adventurous, a climb up Pic Paradis. It is the highest point of St-Martin (424 metres) and offers you a splendid view of the Caribbean Sea and of Marigot.

AEROAFFAIRES also recommends that you stay in the sumptuous Belmond La Samanna Hotel, where you can enjoy its private beach, spa and gourmet restaurant.
