Citation I: A little history
The Citation I marks the debut of the Cessna Citation range of business jets, a family of aircraft that would become one of the most popular in private aviation. Developed by Cessna Aircraft Company in the 1960s, this light private jet was designed to offer a more economical and accessible alternative to the often expensive and complex to operate business jets of the time.
The first flight of the Citation I took place in 1969, and it was officially certified by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in 1971. Its success was based on a winning combination: a jet aircraft offering the ease of use and flexibility of a twin-engine propeller. Unlike its competitors, it stands out for its ability to land on short runways, providing access to secondary airports and more exclusive destinations.
In response to changing market needs, Cessna introduced an improved version, the Citation I/SP, in 1976, offering the possibility of being flown by a single pilot, which reduced operating costs and increased its appeal to private owners and small businesses.
The Citation I was produced until 1985, with over 690 delivered. Although superseded by more powerful models such as the Citation II and Citation CJ series, it remains a landmark in the world of business aviation, having paved the way for a new generation of affordable, versatile private jets.
