History of Istanbul Atatürk Airport

Istanbul Atatürk Airport is one of the most emblematic sites of civil and military aviation in Turkey. It was inaugurated in 1953 as Yesilkoy Airport, before being renamed in honour of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Located on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, around 24 km from the city centre, it has long been Istanbul’s main airport hub, handling both domestic and international flights.

Historical role: For decades, Atatürk was Turkey’s largest airport and one of Europe’s busiest transport hubs. It played a key role in the growth of Turkish tourism and the development of Istanbul’s position as a strategic crossroads between Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Modernisation and growth: Over the years, the airport has undergone several phases of expansion and modernisation to meet the growing demand for air traffic. Infrastructures such as a modern international terminal, VIP lounges and an extended runway have contributed to its ability to accommodate all types of aircraft, from commercial flights to private jets.

Closure for commercial flights: In April 2019, Atatürk airport officially ceased commercial operations with the opening of the new Istanbul airport (Istanbul Havalimani). However, it continues to play a crucial role for private and military aviation, remaining the city’s main business airport. It is also used for cargo purposes and is planned to become a centre for international exhibitions and trade fairs.

This airport, which has seen millions of passengers pass through over the decades, retains an important place in Turkish aviation history, as a symbol of modernisation and global connectivity.

How do I get to the private terminal at Istanbul Atatürk Airport?

When approaching the airport from theE-5 motorway, do not head for the airport’s main terminal. GAT is located at the north end of the airport, on the other (west) side of the runway. Continue on the E-5 motorway through the north side of the airport. At the Florya junction, leave the motorway and follow the road as it curves to the left to pass under the motorway again. Continue for 40 metres and turn left at a 90-degree angle at a junction of 4 roads, follow this road for about 1 km, then turn right onto a road with a sign in Turkish reading “ Genel Havacilik Terminali” or “General Aviation Terminal”. This road leads directly to the terminal.
