History of Barcelona Airport El Prat

In 1918, Barcelona Airport moved from El Remolar to El Prat where it is still located today. The Spanish company Iberia settled there in 1927 and completed the first trip between Barcelona and Madrid. During the Second World War, the airport was used for military purposes, as were the vast majority of European airports.
After the war, the airport was expanded, particularly in the 1950s and early 1990s, just before the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. In 2002, a third runway and a second terminal were built. Today, Barcelona Airport is the tenth largest airport in Europe.
