History of Bari-Palese Airport

• 1934 : the airport is officially born. It is dedicated to Prince Umberto of Savoy and its use is exclusively for military traffic. In the same year the airport opened to civil aviation and the first links with Rome, Venice, Ancona and Tirana were established.
• 1939 : the Savoia Marchetti aircraft is introduced, resulting in the adaptation of the main runway.
• 1947 : after the Second World War, civilian traffic resumes.
• 1951 : the new airport terminal is built.
• 1965/66 : the new control tower is built.
• 1966/68 : The runway is extended to 1,570m. It will be further extended in 2019 to 3,000m in length.
• 1967 : Design of the first extension to the new passenger terminal begins.
