History of Faro airport

Faro airport opened in 1966 to meet the growing demand from tourists wishing to visit the Algarve region. A new terminal had to be added in 1989.

From 2009 to 2013, the infrastructure and runway were extended. Since 2015, further expansion work has been undertaken. The aim is to increase capacity from 6 to 8 million passengers a year.
