Mont-Saint-Michel: a little history
Mont-Saint-Michel traces its origins back to 708, when Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, is said to have commissioned the construction of a sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Saint Michael, following an apparition. The Benedictine abbey, built over the centuries, soon became a major medieval pilgrimage site and a symbol of faith and resistance, particularly during the Hundred Years’ War, when it withstood English assaults.
Situated in the heart of a bay subject to the highest tides in Europe, the Mont was also an impregnable fortress and a strategic site. Its spectacular architecture, clinging to a rocky islet, bears witness to nearly 13 centuries of religious, military and cultural history.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, it now attracts millions of visitors who come to admire the perfect fusion of nature, spirituality and human genius.
