Dornier 228: a little history

The Dornier 228 is manufactured by the German aircraft manufacturer Dornier. This aeronautical industry was founded by Claudius Dornier in 1922. Dornier manufactured numerous seaplane models, as well as military aircraft. Alongside the Dornier 328, the Dornier 228 also met the demand for passenger transport and short-haul cargo flights, and was produced from the 1980s onwards at a factory near Munich. A total of 270 aircraft were built at the time. This aircraft owes its nickname “the truck of the sky” to the fact that it is imposing, but requires only very short landing strips, and can be landed easily on a variety of terrains. The first orders for this aircraft were for a Norwegian airline. After the bankruptcy and demise of the Dornier company, the Swiss aerospace company RUAG took over the rights to machine the Dornier 228 model.

  • What is the Dornier 228's takeoff and landing performance?

The Dornier 228 is renowned for its STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capabilities, enabling it to take off in just 620 meters and land in 500 meters. This feature is particularly useful for accessing secondary airports and short runways, often located closer to business centers and remote destinations. This flexibility enables business travellers to optimize their schedules by avoiding major airport hubs, reducing waiting times and improving route connectivity.

  • Can the Dornier 228 operate on unprepared runways or difficult terrain?

Yes, that’s one of the great assets of the Dornier 228. Designed to be rugged and versatile, it is capable of landing and taking off on unpaved runways, grass strips or even rough terrain, making it an ideal choice for business missions in remote areas or trips requiring maximum flexibility. It is often used to serve islands, mountainous airports and areas not easily accessible by traditional airliners.

  • Why choose a Dornier 228 for a private business flight?

The Dornier 228 is an excellent choice for businesses and professionals looking for an efficient, cost-effective private air transport solution. It offers :

    • Rapid access to business destinations, avoiding congested airports and reducing travel time.
    • In-flight comfort, with a spacious cabin and modularity for meetings or relaxation.
    • Cargo capacity to complement passenger transport, ideal for professionals needing to transport materials or equipment.
    • Excellent value for money, with lower operating costs than private jets, while offering premium service.

This model is often chosen by companies wishing to deploy an in-house fleet, or by professionals with transport needs to hard-to-reach sites.
