Created in the 1920s and opened in 1931, Madrid Barajas airport was originally intended to serve only African and European countries. In the 1940s, it opened up to Asia and Latin America, then to the United States in the 1950s.
Today, Madrid airport is one of Europe’s most important airfields, and boasts one of the world’s largest terminals, with a surface area of 760,000 m². Its four runways can handle up to 120 movements per hour.
