History of Rome Ciampino airport
Opened in 1916, Rome Ciampino airport was originally a military airfield. Serious damage was caused during the Second World War. At the end of the conflict, the decision was taken to rebuild it as an airport dedicated to civil aviation.
With the opening of Fiumicino airport in 1961, traffic fell sharply.
Today, the northern part of the airport has been taken over by the Italian army, and the majority of traffic comes from local and business flights.
