Recommandations

Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is built on a peninsula surrounded by the River Aare. The city’s origins date back to the 12th century, with medieval architecture preserved in the Altstadt (Old Town). The Federal Assembly and diplomats meet in the neo-Renaissance Bundeshaus (Federal Palace). The Französische Kirche (French church) and the medieval Zytglogge tower both date from the 13th century.

If you’re in Berne in November, don’t miss the Berne Carnival. It starts on November 11 at 11:11 a.m. precisely on Bärenplatz.

History of Berne Airport

One of the airport’s hangars, the Biderhangar, built by aviation pioneer Oskar Bider, has been part of Switzerland’s historical heritage since 2008.

Expanded in 2011, the airport now handles flights from outside the Schengen area.

Berne Airport also offers you the opportunity to take a 1.5-hour guided tour of how a flight is organized.

The airport is also home to the Swiss Federal Air Transport Service, as well as a base for the Swiss Air Rescue Service.
