Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is built on a peninsula surrounded by the Aare River. The origins of the city date back to the 12th century, the medieval architecture having been preserved in the Altstadt (the old town). The Federal Assembly and diplomats meet in the Bundeshaus (Federal Palace), a neo-Renaissance style building. The Französische Kirche (French church) and the medieval tower of Zytglogge both date from the 13th century.
If you are in Bern in November, don’t miss the Berne Carnival. It starts on November 11 at 11:11 am precisely, on Bärenplatz.
