History of Geneva Cointrin airport
In 1919, Geneva’s Grand Council passed a law to establish an airfield some 4 kilometers north of the city, near the village of Cointrin. On September 23 , 1920, the first aircraft landed there. In 1945, the runway was extended and in 1946, the first terminal was inaugurated.
A land swap with France led to continued expansion of the airport in the 1950s. Between 1960 and 1990, the facilities were extended several times to accommodate the growing number of passengers.
In 2001, the airport established itself as a leading business terminal by hosting the firstEBACE air show . Since then, this international event has been held here every year.
In 2023, according toEBAA, Geneva Cointrin Airport will rank as the third busiest private airport in Europe. It is also the leading European route with the Paris – Le Bourget – Geneva Cointrin connection. Its 3.9-kilometer runwayis the longest in Switzerland. It is also one of the largest in Europe.
