History of Mamaia
Mamaia was once a village inhabited by Greek fishermen and Romanian shepherds under the control of a Turkish Ottoman ruler named Mamai. This region knows an evolution from 1906. Indeed, at this date, the first seaside resorts were built, causing a considerable rise in the attractiveness of the city which became popular from the 1930s. Unfortunately, the war slowed down the evolution and development of this region that was beginning to attract many people. In the 1960’s, Mamaia experienced a considerable boom due to the communist regime which built large luxurious hotels of about fifteen floors. In the 1970s, the city of Mamaia built a reputation in the neighboring countries, and became the cheap, popular and nearby destination. Today, Mamaia is the most important touristic city in Romania.
