Carpatair is an airline founded in 1999 in Romania. Its head office is located in the city of Timisoara. Carpatair is one of Romania’s leading airlines and is the main carrier in south-east Europe. The company offers both regular and low-cost flights. All aboard for this airline! Let’s find out more about its history and what it does today.
The history of Carpatair
- February 1999: Nicolae Petrov, a former fighter pilot, joins forces with a group of businessmen to set up an airline. Veg Air was set up in Bucharest and made its first flights from Cluj-Napoca to Venice and Budapest.
- December 1999: Veg Air becomes Carpatair when Swiss and Swedish investors acquire a 49% stake in the company.
- 2000: the company moves its operations to Timisoara airport, a city in the west of Romania.
- 2006: the airline becomes a member of IATA (the International Air Transport Association)
- 2014: Carpatair destroys most of its former route network; it no longer operates in Romania or Moldavia. Instead, the company works to consolidate its position on the Italian market, offering flights to Rome or Bari, or in Greece, adding Athens to its destinations. Carpatair operates to an increasing number of destinations, particularly in Northern Europe, including Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Germany and France.
- Between 2015 and 2018, the company operated flights for various airlines. Firstly, for Adria Airways, linking Örebro in Sweden to Copenhagen in Denmark. Secondly, Carportair operates flights for Volotea, the Spanish airline, between France and Italy. Carpatair also operates flights for KLM, the Dutch airline, between Amsterdam, Birmingham, Brussels, Edinburgh and Hanover.
- Today, the company is owned by Romanian shareholders (51%) and Swiss and Swedish shareholders (49%).

Travel arrangements with Carpatair airline
Carpatair cannot be booked or checked in online. To book a flight, you can go through an online ticketing service, an airline broker, a travel agent or by telephone. Flights are only available in economy class; there is no business class.
To check in, simply go to the airport, fill in all the required documents and collect your boarding card. For scheduled flights, the airline recommends arriving at least 2 hours before your scheduled flight time. To check in, you will need to present your flight ticket and identity papers (passport and/or ID card). Other documents may be required if necessary, such as a visa.
For boarding, you will need to present your boarding pass and the identity documents requested for check-in.
Baggage policy with Carpatair
Hand luggage is included in the ticket price. Luggage must not exceed 55 x 40 x 20 cm, including wheels, handles, side pockets, etc., and must not weigh more than 5 kg. If your baggage exceeds this limit, it will be transported in the hold, at an additional cost.
The allowance for hold baggage depends on your destination. The standard maximum dimensions are 203 cm in total (height + length + width) and 23 kg maximum. If you exceed these dimensions and weights, you will be charged an additional fee or your baggage may not even be accepted.
If you have baggage in addition to what you can take with you free of charge (i.e. hand baggage and hold baggage), you will have to pay an amount that will depend on the weight of the baggage.
Carpatair passengers can now add their extra hold baggage online, via an application available on the airline’s website. Using the application, passengers can add their extras to their booking up to one day before their scheduled flight time. Payment is made by credit card and a receipt is sent by email.
Pets with Carpatair airline
If you wish to travel with your pet in the cabin, you must take their own ticket. Carpatair accepts animals in standard cages, which you must provide.
The cage must not exceed 26 cm X 50 cm X 35 cm (height X width X length) and must not weigh more than 6kg.
Only one animal container is permitted per passenger. A maximum number of animals may be carried. That’s why it’s important to apply early.
To transport your pet on an international flight, you will need to pay €75 for a single ticket.
If the size of the cage or the weight of the animal exceeds the authorised standards, the animal must be transported in the hold. Carpatair charges 75 euros per animal weighing less than 25 kg, including cage, and 150 euros per animal weighing more than 25 kg, including cage. However, no charge will be made if the animal accompanies visually impaired passengers or passengers with reduced mobility. To be allowed to travel with you, your pet must be clean, in good health (you will be asked to show a passport for your pet), have the necessary vaccinations and not be pregnant.

The Romanian airline also has its own frequent flyer programme. The “Carpatair Green Club” programme enables members to earn points by validating tickets for every flight taken on board the airline’s aircraft. The programme also includes several statuses: the green card, the silver card and the gold card, each giving access to exclusive privileges. At a certain level, points can be converted into free tickets.
Membership of the programme is open to anyone who wishes to join. When you first book with the airline, all you have to do is ask the agent to register you with the Green Club.
